The Hidden Nature of Money
This week on CMJ we’re going to discuss the secret nature of money. By that, I mean the social aspect to financial matters in the U.S.: don’t ask, don’t tell, when it comes to debt, spending, net worth, and salaries.
I recently finished a book entitled Green With Envy: Why Keeping Up with the Joneses is Keeping Us in Debt, and it’s really got me thinking about such things. I will also do a review on this book later this week.
Before I get too far in to this, I want to throw some truths out there, that people need to hear:
1. You’re not the only one who worries about money.
2. Your friends and neighbors, though they may give off the impression that they have everything together financially, they more than likely do not.
3. Statistically, if you knew two couples who got divorced last year, then you also knew three families that went through a bankruptcy, but you never knew about it. (this one from aforementioned book)
We’ll discuss these in greater detail later this week.

I am really looking forward to this set of posts. This has long been an issue I have thought about and am interested to see what others are thinking. I think confronting the shame and secrecy that come with money problems may be the first step for many (myself included) in having a healthier view of money.
